Summer Reading 2019
Dear Students and Parents,
Whether it’s sitting with your toes in the water at the beach, passing time on a long car or plane ride, or even curled up in your bed in the middle of the night, summer is the perfect time to grab a great book and get lost in its world. As a community, Newtown High School values reading as the foundation of becoming a critical thinker. We also recognize that while reading itself is an individual activity, shared reading experiences promote discussions, open minds, build connections and spark ideas.
This summer we invite all NHS students, families and staff to select at least one of the following books to read over the summer. The list was compiled based on recommendations from teachers from all disciplines and includes books that meet a range of interests and reading levels, representing fiction and non-fiction, male and female authors and male and female protagonists. Our hope is that by sharing a summer reading experience, we can continue to build community and foster intellectual curiosity through informal discussions and other exciting activities when we return to school in the fall.

We encourage you to read as many books as you’d like this summer, but we hope that you’ll find a story that you’ll enjoy on this list as well! Copies will be available to check out at Booth Library throughout the summer. When you’ve chosen and read your book, let us know in our survey. We look forward to talking with you about your favorite summer read this fall!
Be sure to complete the Summer Reading Survey after you have read!
